Go Outside on an Adventure: Rock Exploration
Rock Exploration
Rocks aren’t just hard and heavy—they can also be homes for tiny creatures and clues about the world beneath your feet! Let’s head outside and see what you can discover.
Go to an outdoor area such as your yard, a park, or a nearby trail where you can safely look for rocks. Be careful when lifting them and always put them back where you found them.
- Look for rocks in the area. Carefully lift the rock and see what creatures are under it.
- Did you find any creatures living under the rock?
- What did you find?
- How many did you find?
- What do they look like?
- Why do you think they might like living under rocks?
- Take out your Nature Journal and record what you observe. Sketch one of the rocks you found or a creature that lives beneath it. Make sure to label your sketches and include the date and time.
🕵️♀️ Try This:
Collect a few small rocks (with permission) and compare them. How are they alike or different? Which one is your favorite and why?
