For this book club, we will be using the book Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. You can purchase it in digital, paperback, hardcover, and audio formats. It is also available at many local libraries. This is the only book you will need for this book club.

You will also need a notebook for your notes, copywork, dictation, and journaling.

Note to the Parent:

This historical novel set during the Great Depression includes themes of loss, grief, and poverty, as well as racism and segregation. There are scenes involving the death of a parent, references to abuse in foster care, and mild physical danger, though none are graphic. The book includes some brief references to alcohol. Overall, the tone balances serious topics with humor and hope, making it a meaningful and accessible read for upper elementary and middle school students, with good opportunities for discussion about resilience, kindness, and identity.

As with any children's resource, please refer to trusted sources for reviews before reading. For your reference, we have linked Plugged In's review.
