For this book club, we will be using the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. You can purchase it in digital, paperback, hardcover, and audio formats. It is also available at many local libraries.

Additionally, you will need Breakfast on Mars and 37 Other Delectable Essays edited by Rebecca Stern and Brad Wolfe.

You will also need a notebook or binder for your notes, vocabulary, and writing.

Parent Note:

This classic novel includes strong themes of poverty, loneliness, and discrimination, including racism, sexism, and ableism. It contains violence and death, most notably the killing of animals and people, including a climactic and tragic death that may be upsetting. There are references to prostitution, sexual desire, and alcohol, as well as occasional profanity, including racial slurs. The language reflects the historical period, but can be offensive. While the subject matter is heavy, the novella is widely studied for its powerful themes of friendship, dreams, and human dignity. Families should be aware of its mature content and may want to preview or discuss sensitive elements with students.

We recommend this course for high school age. As with any children's resource, please refer to trusted sources for reviews before reading. For your reference, we have linked Common Sense Media's review.
