with Poetry, Snacks, and Activities!

Celebrate Black Voices Through Poetry!

Welcome to Black History Month Poetry Teatime,
a mini-course where we explore the rich and powerful words of African American poets.

This course is perfect for families who want to bring poetry to life in a way that is engaging, meaningful, and fun!
Dachelle McVey, creator and owner

Hi, I'm Dachelle. I am the owner of Literary Adventures for Kids, and I want to help you teach literature in a way that is easy for you and fun for your kids.

I'm a former traditional teacher turned homeschool mom. I have a passion for literature and for adding adventure to our homeschool. I started several poetry teatimes in my community with the idea that each poetry teatime should be a celebration of literature.

At Literary Adventures for Kids, I take those experiences and use them to create online poetry teatimes that add a little bit of magic to your children's education.

“Education should be a living, breathing, tangible thing.”

Poetry Teatime ~ Black History Month Edition makes it easy to teach poetry to your kids and inspire them to write creatively.

In this course, your student will:

  • Read and explore poetry from legendary Black poets like Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Gwendolyn Brooks, and more.
  • Learn how to write two powerful types of poems—the I, Too, Am... poem (for younger students) and the Golden Shovel poem (for older students).
  • Engage in interactive poetry activities that spark creativity and connection.
  • Discover the beauty of spoken-word poetry and learn how to bring poems to life.
  • Enjoy a cozy and meaningful Poetry Teatime experience!
This poetry study is fun for all ages!

Here’s what parents are saying about Poetry Teatime:

The kids had a wonderful time at Poetry Teatime today and were inspired to write poetry the rest of the afternoon. Thanks for this fun addition to our homeschool!

What supplies will we need?

The project supply list is provided at the beginning of the course.

What are the dates of the poetry teatime?

How long should this course take?

This course can take as long as you would like. It was designed for one month of poetry teatimes. It has enough poems and activities for one or more teatimes during the month.

Will the teacher provide any feedback to the child on their writing projects?

We provide students with the opportunity to share their Writing Projects with us. If they choose to share, we will provide feedback in the form of critiques and encouragement. Some of our students use this option frequently, while others choose to submit their assignments to their parents.

Can this be used for more than one child or as a family book club?

Absolutely! We are a homeschooling family, and we encourage all our children to participate in book clubs. Often we will read the book together as a family read-aloud and then work through the rabbit trails and magic dust together.
