Go Outside on an Adventure: Observe the Trees

Trees give us shade, shelter, and beauty throughout the year. Let’s go outside and spend some time getting to know the trees around you.

Go outside to your yard, a park, or a nearby wooded area where trees are growing.

  • Take your time walking quietly among the trees.
  • Observe what you see.
  • Do any trees have flowers or buds? What do their leaves look like? Are they big, small, smooth, or rough?
  • Can you find any trees with seeds, acorns, or fruit?
  • Are there trees that look different from others nearby?
  • Take out your Nature Journal and record your observations.
  • Sketch one of the trees you noticed, or draw a close-up of its leaves, buds, or bark.
  • Use a nature book or the internet to discover what kind of tree it is and write its name beside your sketch. Include the date, time, and weather in your notes.

🕵️‍♀️ Try This:
Visit your tree again later. Has anything changed? Are there new buds, leaves, or seeds?
