How To Teach This Course

There are different ways to teach this course. We have broken those ways out by age group.

Independent study for older students:

One scripture per day for 10-15 minutes:

  1. Students should read about the literary element(s) covered in the lesson. Students can make notes in their journals.
  2. Listen: Play the audio version of the scripture.
  3. Read: The student should read the scripture to themself.
  4. Write: The student should copy the scripture into their journals.
  5. The student should spend some time thinking about what the scripture means or how it makes them feel. They can write their thoughts in their journals.
  6. The student should look for the literary element(s) they learned.
  7. Mark It Up: Using the guide, the students should mark up their scripture with their literary element(s).
  8. Check It: The students should check their work.


Teaching older students:

One scripture per day for 10-15 minutes:

  1. Teach the literary element(s) that you want to cover first. Students can make notes in their journals.
  2. Listen: Read the scripture aloud or play the scripture.
  3. Read: Let the student read the scripture to themself.
  4. Write: Have the student copy the scripture into their journals.
  5. Spend some time asking the student what the scripture means or how it makes them feel.
  6. Have the student look for the literary element(s) that you taught.
  7. Mark It Up: Using the guide, have the students mark up their scripture with their literary element(s).
  8. Check It: Use this section to grade the student's work.

Alternatively, you could include scripture and literary element study only 1 day per week or a few times per month. In this scenario, you would:

  • Assign your student(s) to do some background research on the scripture.
  • Add an art component to the scripture. 

Teaching younger students:

One scripture per week:

Day 1: Listen: Read the scripture aloud or play the scripture. Have children close their eyes and visualize the scripture. Let them describe what they imagine either with words or with pictures.

Day 2: Read: Let the student read the scripture to themself or aloud. Discuss the scripture again, asking if they noticed anything new in the scripture this time. Give them time to imagine and visualize.

Day 3: Write: Have the student copy the scripture into their journals.

Day 4: Teach the literary element(s) in this scripture. Students can make notes about this literary element in their journals.

Day 5: Mark It Up: Using the guide, help the student identify the literary elements and mark them on their scripture. Check It: Use this section to grade the student's work.
