A Letter to Teachers on How to Use This Course

Important Notes...

We realize there is a lot of information provided. Do not let this overwhelm you. Feel free to skip any parts that do not fit into your schedule or appeal to you.

We have provided you with enough information for 30 days' worth of study. However, this course is designed to be self-led. Please make it work for you -- whether that be over several days or several weeks.

About Our Unit Study Format

This unit study is focused on learning about the animals and plant life in your backyard. You’ll make a map of your backyard, play games, and research different living organisms.

Our young adventurers, Jaxon & Harleigh, are along for the ride. You’ll start each main topic with a letter from our adventurers. These letters give your child a challenge and something to pay attention to while doing the activities. The adventurers also tell simple stories that help your child make connections to their real life, making learning meaningful.

Jaxon & Harleigh also model good questioning and curiosity. The goal is to ignite that curiosity in your child. You’ll soon notice your child asking questions and sharing their curiosities in the same way as the adventurers.

Most lessons start with a reading selection from a picture book or our unit study spine. You can obtain these picture books from the library, but we will always include a read-aloud video from YouTube. The only book you will need to purchase or get from the library is the unit study spine. Sometimes we will include additional videos from YouTube. This is where the topic is introduced and learned.

Then we follow the learning part of the lesson with an experienced-based, hands-on activity. This part of the lesson helps the child make connections, develop a deeper understanding, and put the new knowledge into action.

The last part of the unit study is extension activities. We call this our Party School. These are usually extra videos, game ideas, or extra experienced-based activities. All the extension activities are optional, and they are a great way to continue the learning if your child shows an interest in the daily lesson.

About What Is Included

  • Rabbit Trails - In every online unit study, we will go on rabbit trails of discovery. We will hop off the traditional roads of literature and meander down paths about science, art, history, and more.
  • Magic Dust - We will also bring literature to life by sprinkling a bit of magic dust along the way. These hands-on projects will take us into the study. We will touch, see, feel and learn on our new adventures.
  • Writing Projects - We include age-appropriate writing assignments to engage your young writer and help them to develop their writer's voice.
  • Party School - The pinnacle of the Literary Adventures for Kids experience is the Party School! At the end of each unit study, we will celebrate with a party. Invite friends or family over for food and fun! All the ideas for food and activities are included.
