Go Outside on an Adventure: Nighttime Listening

Bats use their hearing to find their way in the dark. Tonight, you’ll use your ears just like Stellaluna to listen to the world around you.

Go outside to a safe, quiet place near your home, such as your yard, porch, or a park with an adult.

  • Sit or stand still and close your eyes for a few minutes to help you focus on the sounds.
  • Observe what you hear.
  • Do you notice any familiar sounds like crickets, frogs, or rustling leaves?
  • Do you hear any unusual sounds that you don’t recognize?
  • Can you tell which direction each sound is coming from?
  • How many different sounds can you count?
  • Take out your Nature Journal or notebook and record your observations. Write down each sound you heard and what you think might have made it. Include the date, time, and weather in your notes.

🕵️‍♀️ Try This:
Go outside another night and listen again. Do you hear the same sounds, or have they changed?
