Magic Dust: Santa’s Magic Bag

Today we're going to do a science experiment that will help us understand something called volume. Volume is how much space something takes up. We're going to learn how much space a coin takes up in a glass of water. But we're going to make it a little more fun by pretending it's Santa's bag.

For this project, you will need:

  • Plastic cup
  • Black or red felt
  • Glue or tape
  • Water
  • Coins

  1. Wrap a piece of felt around a plastic cup to make Santa’s bag.
  2. Fill the cup to the very top with water. When the cup is sitting on the table, the water should line up with the brim of the cup.
  3. Santa wants to hand out coins to all the children this year, and he needs your help filling his bag.
  4. Predict (that means guess) how many coins will fit in the bag before it overflows with water.
  5. Slowly add one coin at a time until the water overflows.

Was your prediction correct? What did you learn about volume today?
