Go Outside on an Adventure: Discover Wildflowers

The world is full of beautiful colors, just like in The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush. Let’s go outside and look for the wildflowers that bring color to your world.

Go outside to an open area such as a field, park, or along a walking path where flowers might grow.

  • Move slowly and look carefully at the plants around you.
  • Observe what you see.
  • What kinds of flowers do you notice?
  • What colors do you see?
  • Are the flowers short or tall?
  • What shapes do the petals have?
  • Do you see any animals or insects near the flowers?
  • Are they gathering nectar, resting, or hiding for protection?
  • If you live in an area where Indian Paintbrush grows, see if you can spot one!
  • Take out your Nature Journal and record your observations.
  • Sketch one or more of the flowers you saw and label your drawings with their colors and shapes.
  • Include the date, time, and weather in your notes.
  • If there are plenty of flowers, carefully pick one to press and dry in your journal. When you return home, look up the flowers you saw and write their names beside your sketches.

🕵️‍♀️ Try This:
Compare two flowers that are different colors. Do they attract the same kinds of insects or animals?
