Rabbit Trail: Prairies

Dorothy lived in the middle of the wide, flat Kansas prairies. The land stretched out in every direction with almost nothing to break it up—no hills, no forests, not even many trees. Just grass and sky. In the story, this made her home feel lonely and gray, especially when the sun dried up the land and turned everything the same dusty color.
What Dorothy didn’t know is that this land is actually part of something much bigger—it’s called a temperate grassland biome. That’s a fancy way of saying it’s a place with mild weather, tall grasses, and lots of animals and plants that are used to windy, open spaces.
