Welcome to Creative Writing I!

I am so excited you’re here.

You may be feeling a little nervous about this course, and that’s okay.

Writing can feel intimidating. You're putting your thoughts and feelings on a page, and sometimes that feels like handing someone your diary. But here’s the thing: this is a safe space. We’re not here to be perfect. We’re here to grow, to experiment, and to figure out how to express ourselves through words.

This class isn’t about writing essays or following a bunch of rules. In fact, we’re going to break a few.

This is about learning your voice—what makes your writing sound like you. And it’s about learning that writing doesn’t have to be painful or boring. It can be freeing. It can be fun. And yes, sometimes it can even be silly.

I created this course because so many parents told me, “My kids hate writing, but they love your book clubs. Can you help?”

And if you’re one of those kids, guess what? You’re exactly who I made this course for.

I wanted to give you a space where writing doesn’t feel like a chore or something to be afraid of. A place where you can experiment, play, and find your voice without pressure. And yes, I wanted it to feel like the book clubs you already enjoy, just with a little more writing sprinkled in.

Here’s how it’ll work:

  • Each week, you’ll have a lesson to complete and a creative writing assignment. Don’t worry. They will be pain-free!
  • You’ll also be keeping a daily journal. These will be short entries to help you build your writing muscles and learn to notice the world around you.
  • Every other week, we’ll meet live on Zoom. That’s where we’ll do creative writing challenges, share ideas, and support one another.
  • You’ll post your writing assignments right here in the course comments. I’ll be reading and responding to each one with encouragement and tips.
  • And yes, you’ll be able to see each other’s writing. That might feel scary at first, but it’s also part of learning to write with confidence. I’ll show you how to give kind, helpful feedback—and you can choose how much you want to read or share.

I’m here to help you discover that you are a writer.
