Tree-Identifying Nature Hike

It’s time for a winter nature adventure!
Bundle up, grab your leaf or tree identification book, and head outside for a nature hike.

Find a wooded area, park, or even a tree-lined path near your home. Walk slowly and take your time looking at all the trees around you.

• Observe what you see.
• How many different kinds of trees can you find?
• Are some tall and full, while others are short and thin?
• Do you see evergreen trees with needles or bare trees with branches reaching up to the sky?
• Can you spot pinecones, berries, or seeds nearby that tell you what kind of tree it is?
• Take out your Nature Journal and record your observations.
• Write down the trees you identified and draw one or two of your favorites. Label your sketches and include the tree names (if known), date, time, and weather.

🕵️‍♀️ Try This:
Use a tree or leaf identification book (or an app with an adult’s help) to match each tree’s bark, branches, or cones to its name. How many can you identify correctly?
