Magic Dust: Make a Bark Rubbing

Now that you’ve met the trees on your winter hike, let’s create some art with their bark!

For this project, you will need:

  • Paper
  • Pencil or Crayon

Directions:

  • Choose one of the trees you observed earlier and take a closer look at its trunk.
  • What color is the bark? How does it feel—rough, smooth, bumpy, or patterned?
  • To make your bark rubbing, place a sheet of paper gently against the bark.
  • Use the side of a crayon or pencil to rub over the paper until the texture of the bark appears like magic!
  • Try it on a few different trees to see how the patterns change.

We’d love to see your bark rubbings. Share a photo or a page from your nature journal in the comments below.
