Grammar

Estimated Time: 30 minutes

This month, you will be learning about synonyms.

Synonyms are words that have similar meanings. For example, the words "happy" and "joyful" both express a similar feeling, but they might be used in slightly different contexts.

In our current book, I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys, the author often uses a string of synonyms because Cristian is working on learning English and the subtlety of words. Here is an example from the end of Chapter 10:

Deceit. Treachery. Hypocrisy.

I lied to my sister. The person I loved most.

The author used three synonyms closely together. It causes the reader to pause and think about the words and how they are subtly different.

Why Are Synonyms Important?

  • Avoid Repetition: Using synonyms helps to avoid repeating the same word over and over. This can make writing and conversation more engaging and enjoyable to read or listen to.
  • Express Nuances: Different synonyms can express slight variations in meaning, which allows a writer to convey exactly what they feel or think.
  • Enhance Writing: A rich vocabulary makes writing more expressive and can help you better capture your readers’ attention.

While you are reading, look for examples of this use of synonyms and write them down in your notebook.
