Map It: Draw the Island

Estimated Time: 15 Minutes

Today, we're going to start a project that will last us all month! We're going to sketch out the Island of the Blue Dolphins.

For this project, you will need:

  • Paper, posterboard, or a large sketchbook
  • Pencils
  • Colored Pencils
  • Markers

Directions:

  1. As we read about Karana's story, she will describe her island. Pay close attention to how she describes the terrain, the landforms, what creatures live where, and what happens at these places.
  2. Using the maps below, try to identify as many places on the island as you can from the chapters.
  3. Sketch out the general outline of the map of the island. You can use the map below as a guideline for the shape.
  4. Lastly, note on the map where you believe the different places we read about are on the map. You can use a drawing or just a dot and a label.

This week look for:

  • Coral Cove
  • kelp bed
  • village at Ghalas-at
  • any other place you think is interesting in the story
