Denmark was not prepared to defend itself against an invasion by Germany during World War 2. The king surrendered to the Germans to try and spare his people and country from destruction. His neighboring countries chose to fight. The video below was produced in the 1940s. You can see how easily the Germans took over the Denmark and Norway.

▼ Primary Sources ▼ Denmark spent little on defence during the 1930s and when the German Army invaded on 9th April 1940 the armed forces were defeated on the first day. Most of the Danish merchant fleet escaped and sailed to Allied ports.
