For this book club, we will be using the book Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. You can purchase it in digital, paperback, hardcover, and audio formats. It is also available at many local libraries.
Additionally you will need Bookmarked: Teen Essays on Life and Literature from Tolkien to Twilight.
You will also need a notebook or binder for your notes, vocabulary, and writing.
Parent Note:
This novel includes graphic depictions of war violence, including the bombing of Dresden, executions, and death in combat. It contains profanity, sexual references, brief nudity, and adult themes, including infidelity and prostitution. There are also references to mental illness, trauma, and fatalism. The non-linear narrative can be confusing, but mirrors the book’s meditation on time and human suffering. While heavy and mature, the novel is widely studied for its themes of war, free will, and the human condition. Families should be aware of the strong language and sexual content, and may wish to discuss the historical and philosophical context with their student.
We recommend this course for high school age, specifically older teens. As with any children's resource, please refer to trusted sources for reviews before reading. For your reference, we have linked Common Sense Media's review.
