Go Outside on an Adventure: Birds and Nests

The world is full of birds building homes, caring for eggs, and raising their young. Go outside and see what kinds of birds and nests you can find near you.

Go outside to a yard, park, or wooded area where there are trees or shrubs.

  • Move quietly and look up into the branches.
  • Observe what you see.
  • Do you notice any birds flying, singing, or resting on branches?
  • Can you find a nest in a tree or bush?
  • What does the nest look like? Is it large or small, messy or neatly woven?
  • If you spot a nest, watch from a distance so you don’t disturb it.
  • Do you see any eggs or signs that baby birds might be nearby?
  • What other animals or insects do you notice while you are observing? Do you see any other types of eggs?
  • Take out your Nature Journal and record your observations.
  • Sketch a bird, a nest, or another animal you saw.
  • If you find eggs, use a nature book or the internet to identify what kind they might be, and write their name in your journal. Include the date, time, and weather in your notes.

🕵️‍♀️ Try This: Return to the same spot another day. Do you see the same birds or nests? Has anything changed?
