Go Outside on an Adventure: Catch a Snowflake

Just like Peter, it’s time to bundle up and explore the wonder of winter! Let’s head outside and take a close look at snowflakes.

Go outside to an open area with fresh snow and bring a piece of black construction paper or a dark blanket.

  • Observe what you see.
  • Try to capture a snowflake.
  • Hold out your paper or blanket and let snowflakes land on it.
  • Look closely. What do the snowflakes look like? Are they large or small?
  • Do they look the same, or are they different shapes?
  • How long do they last before they melt?
  • Take out your Nature Journal and record your observations.
  • Draw what the snowflakes looked like and describe their shapes, sizes, and patterns.
  • Label your sketches and include the date, time, and weather.

🕵️‍♀️ Try This:
Put your paper in the freezer before going outside so the snowflakes last a little longer while you study them.
