For this book club, we will be using two books. There will be instructions for each book in the Camp course. You will need ONE of the following books:

You can purchase it in digital, paperback, hardcover, and audio formats. It is also available at many local libraries.

A free version is shared below.

You will also need a notebook or binder for your notes, vocabulary, and writing.

Parent Note:

The Nutcracker and The Mouse King by E. T. A. Hoffmann:
This original version of the classic tale is darker and more complex than later adaptations. It includes fantasy violence, mild frightening imagery, and themes of transformation and danger. There is no profanity or sexual content, though the tone is eerie and occasionally unsettling. The story’s mature language and symbolism make it best suited for high school readers who can appreciate its historical and psychological depth.

The Story of a Nutcracker by Alexandre Dumas:
This retelling softens Hoffmann’s darker tale but still contains fantasy battles and mild peril. There are a few instances of profanity and some old-fashioned or dramatic language, but the overall tone is lighter and more whimsical. Suitable for middle school readers, this version balances adventure with imagination and charm. Families may wish to note the single curse word before assigning.

We will be adding in a special live book club for elementary students. You will not need to purchase this book.
