Grammar

Estimated Time: 30 minutes

This month, you will explore prefixes and suffixes, which are a fun and important part of how words are built. We will start this week with prefixes.

A prefix is a group of letters that we add to the beginning of a word to change its meaning. For example, if we add the prefix "un-" to the word "happy," it changes the meaning to the opposite—"unhappy."

Today, we’ll watch a video that explains prefixes in more detail and gives examples of some common ones you’ll see in everyday language. Pay close attention to how adding just a few letters to the start of a word can totally change its meaning.

Start making a list of prefixes. The video will teach you several. If you aren't sure of the meaning of a prefix, you can usually find them in a dictionary.
