Rabbit Trail: Hatcheries
Estimated Time: 10 minutes
Asher rides his bike past the Salmon Hatchery, a place where workers carefully separate and manage fish. In Jonas’s world, everything is controlled, including the way animals are handled. But did you know that salmon hatcheries exist in our world, too?
Salmon hatcheries play a big role in helping salmon populations survive. These facilities help raise young salmon before releasing them into the wild, making sure that more fish make it to adulthood. Since salmon are a key part of the ecosystem—and an important food source for animals and people—hatcheries work to protect their numbers.
We’re going to watch a video which explains how hatcheries work and why they are important for salmon recovery.
Have you ever been to a hatchery?
