In the early chapters of The Giver, Jonas describes seeing a cargo plane and later a single-pilot jet, both of which are important to the story.

To help us picture what Jonas saw, we’re going to watch two short video clips. One will show a cargo plane, which is used to carry large amounts of goods, and the other will show a single-pilot jet, which is smaller and more personal. You don’t need to watch the entire videos—just enough to notice the differences between the two types of planes.

After seeing both types of planes, why do you think Jonas might have reacted so strongly to the single-pilot jet?
