Rabbit Trail: Olympia

Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Olympia is like the birthplace, or the very first home, of the Olympic Games. It's a real place that you can visit in Greece, full of ancient ruins and stories from long, long ago.

We don't know exactly what it looked like then, but we can imagine a place so important that people from all different places would come together just to play sports and celebrate. It was full of big statues, beautiful temples, and even a stadium, just like the sports stadiums we have today, but made from stone and earth.

Here is an artist's idea of what Olympia may have looked like in 776BC.

Even though it's been thousands of years, we can still see where all of this happened. There are old stones, columns, and parts of buildings that show us where athletes ran, jumped, and competed in the ancient Olympics.

In this video of what Olympia looks like now, you can see the ruins and imagine what it might have been like back then.

If you could visit Olympia today, what is one thing you would like to see or find out more about?
